Panamanian Citizenship

The following individuals may request Panamanian citizenship by naturalization:

(1) Foreigners having resided for five consecutive years in Panama and who have Panamanian residency.
(2) Foreigners with three consecutive years of residence, after obtaining a permanent residency permit, that have children born in Panama of a Panamanian father or mother.
(3) Citizens by birth of Spain or any Latin American country if they meet the same requirements that a Panamanian has to meet in order to become a citizen of their country.

Getting Married
Getting married in Panama is easy provided you have all the necessary paperwork and follow the correct procedures. This is what a foreign citizen has to do:

(1) You must provide both birth and bachelorhood certificates which have to be authenticated by the Panamanian Consulate in your home country. Next, both documents have to be delivered to the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores in Panama. Once you are there give said papers to the Department of Legalizaciones y Autenticaciones to be authenticated.
(2) You will also need a medical certificate called a Dictamen Médico issued by a Panamanian doctor within 15 days prior to the wedding. The physical exam must include the following lab tests: urinalysis,HIV, blood test and V.D.R.L.
(3) A Valid passport or Carnet de Migración if you have been in the country for more than 30 days.
(4) Two witnesses of adult age with a passport, who are not family members of the people being married.
All of the above must be presented to the Juzgado de Turno en Matrimonios (Marriage Court), ideally two or three days before the wedding .
It is essential that both birth and bachelorhood certificates be authorized prior to arriving in Panama. Otherwise, the documents will have to be mailed back to your home country for the process to be complete.

If you plan to marry a Panamanian citizen, he/she has to do the following:

(1) Provide a birth certificate from the Civil Registry or Registro Civil.
(2) A divorce decree if pertinent from the Civil Registry.
(3) You will also need a medical certificate called a Dictamen Médico issued by a Panamanian doctor within 15 days prior to the wedding. The physical exam must include the following lab tests: urinanalysis, HIV and blood test.
(4) A birth certificate for your children , if they are from the marrying couple.
(5) Two witnesses of adult age who are not family members of the people being married.
